TAKE THE TEMP
(the New Mexico Temporary License)-
IT’S VALID AND OFFICIAL
As of April 21, 2008, the state of New Mexico began using a new secure driver’s license to protect New Mexicans from identity theft.
Verification of identity takes a few weeks, and licenses will be processed and mailed from a central facility. MVD customers — first time driver’s license applicants, out-of-state driver’s license applicants, renewals, replacements and ID card applicants — will be issued a New Mexico temporary license extension while their regular license is being processed and mailed. Their old license will be hole-punched. The temporary license extension is valid for 45 days from date of issue.
The temporary license extension and the hole-punched license (or another form of official government photo identification e.g. a passport, military ID card or New Mexico ID card for first time drivers) are only valid when presented together.
Restaurants and bars are being asked to honor the temporary license. It is official identification when used within the guidelines above.
