Dear NMRA Members,
As we navigate the legislative landscape in New Mexico, I want to take a moment to outline our four key priorities for this session that will significantly impact our industry.
Paid Family Medical Leave – Oppose
We believe that while the intention behind paid family medical leave is commendable, the proposed legislation could impose substantial financial burdens on restaurants, particularly small businesses. The additional costs associated with compliance and potential staffing challenges could hinder our ability to provide jobs and maintain service quality. We urge our members to communicate their concerns to legislators to ensure that any such measures consider the unique challenges faced by our industry.
Liquor Tax Increases – Oppose
Proposed increases to liquor taxes could have detrimental effects on our restaurants, leading to higher prices for consumers and potentially reduced sales. The restaurant industry is already facing numerous challenges, and further taxation could drive customers away and impact our bottom line. We stand firm against any tax increases that would negatively affect our ability to operate sustainably and serve our communities.
Minimum Wage Increase – Oppose
While we recognize the importance of fair wages, increasing the minimum wage could disproportionately affect the restaurant sector, which relies heavily on an entry-level workforce. Such an increase could lead to higher menu prices, reduced hiring, and job losses. We advocate for a balanced, reasonable approach that ensures fair compensation while considering the economic realities of our industry.
Support of the Interchange Fee Prohibition Act – Support
We strongly support the Interchange Fee Prohibition Act, which aims to eliminate interchange fees on tax and gratuity portions of electronic payment transactions. This legislation will provide much-needed relief to our members by reducing unnecessary costs associated with payment processing. By supporting this act, we can foster a fairer financial environment for our restaurants and enhance our ability to invest in our businesses and employees.
Of course, we will keep our eye out for legislation that affects the industry, and we can always use the grassroots help from members in speaking to their hometown legislators. Your voices are crucial in advocating for our interests and ensuring our concerns are heard.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement.
At your Service,
Carol Wight
